Welcome to our Mountain Discovery Charter School (M.D.C.S.) website, and to our “Two Years -Two Million Dollars” Capital Campaign homepage. Because we are such a small school community with big successes over the years, we have set a lofty goal in order to ensure we can maintain our “small school” culture while expanding our whole child, learning goals for more students.

We opened our doors in 2002 as a North Carolina public charter school, located in The Great Smoky Mountains in the far western part of the State of North Carolina. The NC legislature does not provide funding for public charter school infrastructure. As such, we have never received North Carolina state dollars for facilities development. Because of our success as an elementary and middle school institution, our waitlist continues to grow but our infrastructure is in need of updates. Contributions to our official capital campaign will help preserve and expand the MDCS culture and allow us to open our doors to more students.

As a 501( C ) 3 organization, all donations are tax deductible… regardless of how big or small. Please contact Mrs. Londa Bohl, Capital Campaign Coordinator, to discuss your donation. She is happy to answer any and all questions, in addition to assisting you with stock or bond donations. M.D.C.S. is happy to take a capital gain off your balance sheet.

M.D.C.S. programs:

All MDCS students have daily access to the great outdoors and outside learning opportunities, year round.

A variety of unique MDCS learning programs include but not limited to Cherokee history and crafts, archery, reading buddies, percussion ensemble, ceramics, painting, podcast production, campus improvement, gardening, homemade broom making, active bee keeping, craft labs, etc.

All MDCS classrooms, from Kindergarten to Middle School average 14 – 16 field trips per year.

A daily Physical Education program exists at MDCS.

MDCS offers daily and weekly Art and Music classes.

A campus woodshop and class exists at MDCS.

MDCS overnight camping programs begin in 4th grade and culminate in 8th grade with a week long, backpacking and canoeing trip into the wilderness area of the Great Smoky Mountains.

The M.D.C.S. herb, vegetable and flower gardens are planted, cultivated and harvested by students in all grades, K-8, and is featured at our local farmer’s market in the Spring of each year.

The annual, M.D.C.S. Production Night, is a revered tradition where all elementary students appear and participate in a stage production.

Leadership roles among our MDCS students are fostered year round for students in all grade levels, K-8.

Because we know teaching is an art, the M.D.C.S. Licensed teachers are not micromanaged, but rather have autonomy to implement the North Carolina Department of Education curriculum in a manner that taps into each teacher’s unique skillset of talents.
