Welcome to our Mountain Discovery Charter School (M.D.C.S.) website, and to our “Two Years - Two Million Dollars” Capital Campaign homepage. Because we are such a small school community with big successes over the years, we have set a lofty goal in order to ensure we can maintain our “small school” culture while expanding our whole child, learning goals for more students.

We opened our doors in 2002 as a North Carolina public charter school, located in The Great Smoky Mountains in the far western part of the State of North Carolina. The NC legislature does not provide funding for public charter school infrastructure. As such, we have never received North Carolina state dollars for facility development. Because of our success as an elementary and middle school institution, our waitlist continues to grow, but our infrastructure is in need of updates. Contributions to our official capital campaign will help preserve and expand the MDCS culture and allow us to open our doors to more students.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to inspire students to enjoy and lead their own learning.

All students are actively engaged in learning that has value and consequence beyond the classroom.

Parents, students, teachers, and staff are dedicated to:

  • Fostering individual learning styles.
  • Nurturing and facilitating our children’s natural abilities to think creatively and critically.
  • Promoting self-confidence through respect for self, others and the environment.
