Hello, I’m Mr. Luke! I was born in Boone, NC and I grew up in Sylva. In fact, I have spent the majority of my life in my native Southern Appalachia. I graduated from Smoky Mountain High School, then Berea College and finally WCU (where I received my training in elementary education). I like to read fiction, play folky rock music, make pottery and spend time with my wife, Jessica Webb, outside in the wondrous Smoky Mountains. I was raised by a Lutheran minister and a studio artist/educator. I have worked so many different jobs over the years but I am happy and relieved to have found my calling- teaching art at MDCS. I started here as an intern back in Spring 2020 and have stuck around in various roles ever since. It is a very special place where children’s curiosity is nurtured and kids are encouraged to really be themselves! I love MDCS for that, and for many other reasons.
