Cross Country

Each Fall, MDCS offers both a boys and girls Cross County team. Middle School students in grade 6-8 are able to join the team. Cross Country helps students build stamina and endurance as they strive to beat their personal best. The team competes against other schools in meets across Western North Carolina. Basketball

During the Winter, MDCS offers both a boys and girls Basketball team. Middle School students in grade 6-8 are able to join the team. Practices are used to help students learn and improve on basic skills such as dribbling and passing and learn simple drills and plays. The teams play against other schools across Western North Carolina. To join the team, students must have a current sports physical on file. MDCS also offers Basketball Skills Development for any 5th-8th grade student. Students get to develop basic basketball skills while practicing with a coach from Swain Middle School. Please reach out to Brook Stillman at bstillman@mountaindiscovery.org for more information.

 

Volleyball

MDCS had its first Volleyball Team during the 2024-2025 school year and continues to build on the program this year. Middle school girls have the opportunity to play for the school’s team and play in matches against other schools across the Western North Carolina area. Girls will learn the rules of volleyball and develop basic skills such as bump, set, spike. To participate on the volleyball team, students must have a current sports physical on file. Cheerleading

Cheerleading at Mountain Discovery is designed to build school spirit, teamwork, and pride and is open to Middle School students in grade 6-8. Through chants, cheers, and smiles, our cheer team supports athletics, fosters community, and encourages positivity both on and off the court. Cheerleaders attend home and away basketball games. Archery

MDCS began participating in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) during the 2024-2025 school year and continues this school year. Students in grades 6-8 have the opportunity to take archery as an elective and  learn the basics of archery by working with a compound bow and arrows to shoot at targets. Additionally, students also have the chance to participate on the school’s competition team.
